The purpose of the counseling program at Heard County Middle School is to strive to meet the emotional, relational, physical, and academic needs of every child that enters our doors.

We have determined from student and parent input that time and resources need to be concentrated into the following areas concerning middle school students.
Internet Safety Week – a week designated to educate/inform students of the dangers on theinternet and how to be safe.  We also include cell phone - texting/sexting.

Red Ribbon Week – We will be celebrating Red Ribbon Week this year the week of October 21st through October 25th.  The purpose is to educate/inform students about all categories ofalcohol/drugs. We try to make the learning as fun as possible so we have various competitions where students can compete for prizes as well as “dress up” days.  The "dress up" days are posted on my calendar for this year.

GACollege411/Bridge Law – the link to this website is www.gacollege411.com and your child has his/her password and user name.  This program and website are immensely valuable in guiding children into educational and career paths.  We begin this program in fall of their 6thgrade year and build on it each year.  At the end of 8th grade students will complete an "IGP" which is an Individual Graduation Plan and select high school classes.  This program offers several career interest inventories as well as post-secondary options; financial aid; how to complete a resume/job application; etc.  It has an excellent component for parents!

Bullying – we set aside a time usually during September each year to educate/inform students on the seriousness of bullying including cyber-bullying.

Conflict Resolution – we have a “sign-up sheet” in the office for students to sign when they need to meet individually or in small groups with the counselor in order to resolve conflicts.

Higher Learning

College Visitations – these are completed through the National Junior Honor Society.

 Other Resources

Food Pantry/Closet – upon student request we will send home a "food bag" as often as we can…this is supported by Mrs. Sherry Williams and the Local Heard Housing Authority and one church in our community.

School Supplies – children that need school supplies we have churches and our local Family Connections that donate items to us and we supply as much as we possibly can for children throughout the school year.
